Green material selections: On the first floor, an exposed concrete floor stays cool in hot weather; it does not require a redundant flooring material over the top of it. The loft uses thick dimensional lumber as flooring material to allow multiple re-finishing opportunities throughout its life. Richlite countertops provide a durable paper-fiber recycled material that may be sanded to remove stains. The steel stud shell is a life-long material that is resistant to rot or infestation. Green design: This simple wedge-shaped building envelope reduces the western exterior wall and creates a single shed roof for maximized water collection. From early schematic design, we seek to capitalize on site conditions: avoiding sun over-exposure, capturing available breezes and considering future use of the site. The building layout responds to our clients’ current needs and considers possible future needs in terms of people, patterns and activities. We seek to go beyond current trends or styles and instead create resolutions that express experiential volumes and honest material massing.
